11:00 AM Worship – Sermon Series: “The End of the World?” Part 1: No One Knows the Day or Hour
June 20 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
This summer, the pastoral staff at Community United Church is offering a variety of sermon series to explore theological ideas and central characters of the Christian faith.
Our first sermon series is on eschatology. By definition, eschatology is “the study of the end.” Throughout the ages, Christians have had much to say about the end of the world, with various teachings on judgment day, the resurrection, heaven, hell, and who goes where.
Too, often, eschatology has been turned into a subject of fear, narrow predictions, or very odd speculations about timelines and signs. Christian history is full of examples of people thinking that they know when the end is coming, and how. None of these have been accurate.
It’s time we turn from all the bad eschatology that’s out there and embrace something much better.
Join us as we explore eschatology as a source of hope and good news! When we dig more deeply into Christian eschatology, we’ll find that much of what has been said about the “end times” in popular culture and fundamentalist Christianity is far too fear-based. What the scriptures actually reveal is a vision of “the end” that uplifts all people to live on earth as it is in heaven.
This week, in the face of so many predictions about the end of the world, we learn very plainly from Christ that “No one knows the day or hour.” Christ teaches this so that we can be free from worrying about the end, in order to live by faith, hope, and love.
