Become the Compassion We Need

Douglas Hearn | Monday Jun 15th, 2026

When Jesus looked out at the crowds, he did not see labels, political tribes, or talking points. He saw people. He saw neighbors carrying burdens that others could not see. He saw people who were exhausted, discouraged, and longing for hope. I think that image speaks directly to our world today. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the division, anger, and hardship around us. It is much harder to slow down, look someone in the eye, and recognize their humanity. Yet that is where compassion begins. It begins when we choose to see one another not as issues to debate, but as people worthy of dignity, care, and love.

Jesus said the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Those words still ring true. There is no shortage of opportunities to make a difference. Every day we encounter people who are struggling to be seen, heard, and valued. Some are carrying the weight of poverty, loneliness, discrimination, grief, or fear. Others simply need someone willing to listen. The work of God's kingdom is not reserved for clergy or experts. It belongs to all of us. Sometimes being a laborer means standing up for justice. Sometimes it means welcoming those who have been pushed aside. Sometimes it means showing up, lending a hand, or reminding someone they are not alone.

The kingdom Jesus proclaimed comes near whenever compassion is put into action. It comes near when we choose kindness over judgment, understanding over suspicion, and hope over despair. We may not solve every problem facing our communities, but we can help create the kind of world Jesus envisioned. We can be the people who notice, who care, and who act. In a time when so many feel abandoned or forgotten, perhaps the invitation of this scripture is simple: do not wait for someone else to be the laborer. Become the compassion this world so desperately needs.

Scripture

"When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd." — Matthew 9:36

Prayer

Compassionate God, help me to see others through eyes of love. Give me the courage to stand with those who are hurting, the wisdom to seek justice, and the willingness to serve wherever hope is needed. May my life reflect your compassion in a world that longs for healing. Amen.
