Don’t Miss the Quiet You’re Standing In

Douglas Hearn | Tuesday May 12th, 2026

Some days just feel full. Not always bad, just full. One thing runs into the next, and before we know it, we’ve carried a whole day without ever really settling into it. And somewhere along the way, I’ve noticed this in my own life, we start thinking peace has to be something big to count. A free afternoon. A quiet house. A break from it all. But more often than not, that kind of peace just doesn’t come.

What does come are these small, almost hidden spaces. Sitting for a moment before getting out of the car. Standing at the sink with nothing but the sound of the water. That brief pause before the next conversation begins. It’s easy to miss, but that may be the only peace we’re given in that day. And maybe that’s enough. Scripture doesn’t tell us to wait for perfect conditions. It simply says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10, NRSV). Just be still. Even if it’s only for a moment. Even if the world starts right back up again a second later.

So maybe today isn’t about finding more peace. Maybe it’s about noticing what’s already there. The moment between moments. The breath you didn’t rush. The second you didn’t fill. God has a way of showing up there, not in overwhelming ways, but in steady, quiet presence. And sometimes, that’s exactly what carries us through.

Prayer-

God, help us not to rush past the quiet. Open our eyes to the small moments where you meet us, and give us the grace to receive them. Amen.
