Were the Seed Takes Root

Douglas Hearn | Monday Jul 13th, 2026

“The seed sown on good soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit.”
— Matthew 13:23

“God’s love is a seed planted deep within us. It grows slowly, often unseen, but it has the power to transform our whole life.”
— Adapted from the writings of Henri Nouwen

There is something comforting about Jesus’ words in this parable. He does not tell us that every seed will immediately grow or that every heart will always be ready. Jesus understands that life is complicated. There are seasons when our hearts are open and full of hope. There are also seasons when we are tired, discouraged, or carrying things that make it hard to hear God’s voice. Yet the good news is this: God never stops planting seeds.

God’s grace keeps finding its way into our lives. Sometimes it comes through a quiet moment of prayer, a conversation with a friend, a stranger’s kindness, or the courage to stand up for someone who needs an advocate. We often look for big signs of God’s presence, but so much of God’s work begins quietly, like a seed hidden beneath the soil. We may not see the growth right away, but that does not mean God is not at work.

Perhaps the invitation of Jesus is not to worry about whether we are perfect soil. None of us are. The invitation is to trust the gardener who continues to plant, nurture, and bring new life. As people of the United Church of Christ, we are called to become places where love takes root and grows, not only for ourselves but for a world longing for compassion, justice, and hope. God is still planting. May we be willing to receive the seeds of grace and allow them to grow through our lives.

Prayer:
Loving God, help us notice the seeds of your love that are already growing within us. When our hearts become hardened or tired, remind us that you are still at work. Nurture in us the courage to grow in compassion, to live with hope, and to share your love with others. Amen.
