When the Spirit Keeps Speaking

Douglas Hearn | Wednesday May 27th, 2026

Some days it feels easier to stay quiet. To avoid difficult conversations, keep our heads down, and not risk being misunderstood. But in John 15, Jesus reminds his followers that living with compassion, mercy, and truth has never been the easy road. There will always be voices that push back against kindness, inclusion, and justice. Still, Jesus promises that we are not left alone in that work. The Spirit continues to move through ordinary people who are simply trying to love others well.

“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf.” — John 15:26

What I appreciate about this passage is its honesty. Jesus does not offer shallow reassurance or pretend that faith protects us from struggle. Instead, he reminds us that God’s Spirit stays with us right in the middle of the tension and uncertainty. I see that Spirit at work whenever someone chooses understanding over judgment, gentleness over cruelty, or courage over silence. In a world that often feels angry and divided, those choices matter more than we sometimes realize.

Maybe part of our calling now is simply to keep showing up with love. To keep encouraging people who are tired. To keep caring for neighbors who feel forgotten. To keep speaking hope into places where despair has settled in too long. We will not always get it right, but the Spirit keeps nudging us forward anyway — toward compassion, toward justice, and toward becoming more fully human with one another.

Prayer:
Spirit of truth, stay with us when the world feels heavy and divided. Give us the courage to live with compassion, to speak with kindness, and to keep choosing love even when it is difficult. Help us become people who bring hope and peace wherever we go. Amen.
