Facing the Future Without Fear

Douglas Hearn | Monday Feb 3rd, 2025

Fear of the future has become a common refrain in our conversations. Friends, neighbors, and even family members whisper their worries—about the economy, the state of the world, or simply what tomorrow may bring. Uncertainty is unsettling, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by what we cannot control. But while fear is a natural response to the unknown, it does not have to define us. Jesus reassured his followers with these words: “Do not be afraid. I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). His message wasn’t just for that moment in history—it’s a reminder for us today, in all our uncertainty, that we are not alone.

Fear feeds on isolation, on the belief that we must face life’s challenges alone. But the truth is, we are stronger together. When we lean into faith—whether in God, in each other, or in the belief that goodness still exists—we find courage. Strength comes in many forms: the kindness of a friend, the quiet resilience of getting up each day, the simple choice to believe in hope over despair. Fear wants to keep us stuck, but faith—however we define it—urges us forward.

The future is uncertain, but so is its potential for beauty, for healing, for change. Every sunrise is a quiet promise that life moves forward, that light follows darkness. Instead of dwelling on fear, what if we shifted our focus to what we can build? What if we chose to move forward not with anxiety, but with trust? We don’t have to have all the answers. We just have to take the next step, believing that we are not alone—and that hope, even in the smallest measure, is always within reach.
