Living the Radical Love of Christ

Douglas Hearn | Monday Feb 24th, 2025

The words of Jesus in Luke 6:27-38 challenge us to love in ways that go beyond what feels natural. “Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.” This is not a love based on convenience or reciprocity, but a love that mirrors God’s own mercy. It calls us to respond to unkindness with goodness, to extend generosity without expecting anything in return, and to approach every person with the same grace we ourselves have received.

This kind of love does not mean allowing harm to continue unchecked or pretending that wrongs do not exist. Rather, it is a call to rise above resentment, to refuse to let bitterness shape our hearts. Jesus invites us to see others as He sees them—not only as they are, but as they could be through the power of love. When we give freely, forgive willingly, and show mercy abundantly, we participate in the work of God, who is “kind to the ungrateful and wicked.” In doing so, we become reflections of His compassion in the world.

To love in this way is not always easy, but it is the path Jesus has set before us. It requires us to surrender our need for control and trust that love is never wasted. “Give, and it will be given to you,” Jesus assures us, reminding us that generosity of heart returns in ways we cannot predict. As we follow His example, we become part of something greater than ourselves—spreading kindness, offering healing, and living in the abundance of a love that knows no limits.
