Moving Beyond Hesitation

Douglas Hearn | Monday Apr 28th, 2025

Doubt is not the end of faith but often it’s beginning. The life of Thomas the Apostle reminds us that honest questioning can lead to deeper conviction. Though remembered as “Doubting Thomas,” he was not condemned for his uncertainty; rather, Jesus met him with compassion, offering the proof he sought. Thomas’ response, "My Lord and my God," stands as one of the most powerful declarations of faith in Scripture. His story teaches that doubt, when brought before Christ, can be transformed into unwavering devotion and a lifelong mission.

According to tradition, Thomas traveled farther than any other apostle, bringing the Gospel to India. There, he established Christian communities in Kerala, baptizing believers and planting the seeds of a faith tradition that endures to this day. These communities, known as the Saint Thomas Christians or Nasrani, developed a distinct identity, blending Eastern Christian practices with the local culture. Their very existence is a testament to Thomas' courage, perseverance, and the enduring power of a faith that had once been born through doubt.

Today, Thomas’ legacy calls us to a resilient and courageous faith. His life assures us that seasons of uncertainty do not disqualify us from making a lasting impact. Instead, they can forge in us a faith strong enough to reach across cultures and generations. Like Thomas, we are invited to move beyond hesitation, to believe deeply, and to live boldly, proclaiming with our lives and our words, "My Lord and my God," as we carry the message of hope to the world.
