Redefining Greatness

Douglas Hearn | Monday Sep 23rd, 2024

In today's world, greatness is often defined by power, wealth, and influence. Society places a high value on success that is visible and celebrated, encouraging us to climb the ladder of achievement and outshine those around us. This standard is reinforced everywhere, from corporate boardrooms to social media, where numbers and status symbols are equated with personal worth. Often, this pursuit of worldly greatness leaves a void, a hunger for more, without ever truly fulfilling the soul.

In contrast, the teachings of Jesus offer a radically different perspective on what it means to be great. In scripture, Jesus calls us to step away from the world's definition of greatness and embrace a life of humility and service. He reminds us that true greatness is not found in being served, but in serving others. It's not about how much we can gain for ourselves, but how much we can give to those in need. This shift in focus transforms greatness from something self-centered to something other-centered, where acts of kindness and compassion become the true markers of a life well-lived.

To follow Jesus' path is to understand that greatness is not about self-promotion or accumulating wealth, but about self-sacrifice and lifting others up. It is a quiet, often unseen journey of love, where the most powerful acts are those that reflect the heart of a servant. By living in this way, we discover that the fulfillment we seek doesn’t come from elevating ourselves, but from pouring ourselves out in service to others—a greatness that transcends the fleeting rewards of this world and echoes into eternity.
