Resisting Temptation

Douglas Hearn | Monday Mar 10th, 2025
In a world obsessed with influence and control, the temptation to chase power is stronger than ever. We see it in politics, business, and even in personal relationships—the drive to dominate, to be first, to shape the world in our own image. But Jesus shows us another way. When the devil offered Him authority over all the kingdoms of the world, Jesus refused, saying, “Worship the Lord your God, and serve Him only” (Luke 4:8). His rejection of power for its own sake is a reminder that true strength comes not from ruling over others, but from surrendering to God’s will.
The temptation of power isn’t just for the rich and famous; it sneaks into our daily lives in subtle ways. We’re tempted to control outcomes instead of trusting, to put our own desires ahead of others, to win arguments rather than seek understanding. Social media rewards self-promotion, workplaces encourage competition over collaboration, and even faith can be twisted into a tool for influence rather than love. But Jesus calls us to something deeper: a life defined not by what we can take, but by what we can give. A life where humility triumphs over pride and service is greater than status.
Resisting the lure of power is not about weakness—it’s about choosing a different kind of strength. It’s the strength to love when hate is easier, to trust when fear takes hold, to lift others up rather than seek our own elevation. The world tells us that success is about getting ahead, but Jesus turns that upside down: “Whoever wants to be first must be the servant of all” (Mark 9:35). The way of Christ is not about control, but surrender; not about status, but sacrifice. And in that surrender, in that sacrifice, we find the freedom and peace that no worldly power can ever provide.
