The Aromas of Awakening

Douglas Hearn | Tuesday Aug 19th, 2025

Scents have a way of stirring our souls in ways words often cannot. The fragrance of blossoms carried by the wind, the smell of fresh rain on warm soil, or even the aroma of bread baking in the oven can stop us in our tracks and awaken something deep within us. These moments, seemingly small, invite us into presence—into a way of noticing that the divine is often closest when we are most attentive to the ordinary. When we breathe deeply and let these aromas settle into our awareness, the sacred and the simple become woven together.

The Song of Solomon reminds us: “The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away” (Song of Solomon 2:13, NRSV). Fragrance here is not just a sensory delight, but a holy invitation. The blossoming vines give forth their aroma as a sign of life renewed, and the voice of God calls us to step away from weariness, despair, or distraction and move toward joy. Just as the fragrance of flowers cannot be contained but drifts freely into the air, so too does God’s love move through our lives—subtle yet undeniable, delicate yet powerful enough to stir our spirits awake.

When we pay attention to these fragrant invitations, our souls learn to see every aroma as a reminder of God’s presence. The sweet scent of a garden can nudge us to gratitude. The smell of rain may remind us of cleansing and renewal. Even the fragrance of a simple meal can call us into communion, echoing God’s abundance and care. Each aroma, then, becomes a messenger: a gentle whisper that life is sacred, that love surrounds us, and that we are invited—again and again—to awaken and come away with God into joy, peace, and astonishment.
