Union in the Present Moment

Douglas Hearn | Monday Aug 26th, 2024

"True spirituality is not a search for perfection or control or the door to the next world; it is a search for divine union now." — Richard Rohr

True spirituality, as Richard Rohr suggests, isn't about striving for an unattainable perfection or trying to control the uncontrollable. Many people mistakenly equate spirituality with a set of rules or practices that, if followed strictly, will lead to a flawless life or guarantee entry into the next world. However, this approach often leads to frustration, anxiety, and a sense of failure when life's inevitable imperfections arise. True spirituality acknowledges that life is messy and unpredictable, and it invites us to embrace these realities rather than resist them.

The essence of true spirituality lies in the search for divine union in the present moment. It is about recognizing that the divine is not something distant or reserved for another time or place but is right here, right now, in the midst of our daily lives. This union doesn't require us to be perfect but rather to be open and aware, to see the sacred in the ordinary, and to understand that every moment is an opportunity to connect with the divine. It’s about finding God in the mundane and recognizing the holy in the here and now.

This perspective transforms the way we live, as it shifts the focus from striving for something beyond to embracing the fullness of life as it is. It allows us to experience a deep sense of peace and contentment, knowing that we are already in the presence of the divine. This divine union isn't something to be earned or achieved; it’s a gift that is available to us at every moment. True spirituality, then, is not a journey of becoming something else but of realizing and embracing who we already are in relationship with the divine.
